NEON A brilliant project. On “Procession” Alexander lays out the melodic red carpet as his notes rain over the listener like a morning shower. Yet it’s the tune’s undercurrents that are inviting, including a truly outstanding sixteen bar intro. Zonjic employs layers of flute textures that skip lightly - note for note - over Bob James’ dancing synth lines. Ultimately, Zonjic’s finest work appears on the interlocking, experimental “Hi-Falutin’”. The intro is a snowballing grabber in the form of three roaring waves of eight bar assaults and a four bar bridge. Meteors of hard guitar riffs and juggernauts of flute riffs and synth textures come at the listener in all directions. The percussion is relentless, while the composition is playfully unpredictable. Musical settings swerve and swell, fading out against the ambience of a buzzing café atmosphere. On the title cut, Zonjic’s flute lines are a true highlight, while “N’est Ce Pas” is a catchy track bolstered by the incomparable tenor sax voice of Kirk Whalum. Brilliant stuff. |
