The elegant smoothness of Alexander Zonjic’s Passion will make you appreciate the unique and sensitive voice the flute can bring to the more impressionistic corners of jazz. Seemless, expressive playing in a remarkable range of styles keeps the fires of Passion alive throughout. A real highlight is The Impression’s “People Get Ready” with its outstanding gospel tinged vocal. Also of note are inventive pieces like Memphis Underground, with its low growling bass and offbeat staccato flute rhythms, and a gorgeous arrangement of Poulenc’s “Sonata for Flute and Piano”. This entire album benefits from the exceptionally tasteful musical arrangements producer Kirk Whalum brings to the set. “Passion” conjures up a Caribbean feel as a melodic bass line trades refrains with Zonjic’s flute. “Oblivion” emotes a dark and sexy tango feel, with Zonjic stretching out on passionate, sustained notes, while Earl Klugh contributes an outstanding guitar solo. Very passionate.
